A Quick Chat with Tia Brittany
When approaching a new song, what is the creative process like for you?
Most of my songs on the new album started as little notes on my phone that eventually turn into full stories. Once I’m in the studio, it becomes a really collaborative and fun process. Recording “Don’t Talk Feelings”, I would start by bringing in the rough ideas and voice recordings of the songs. Then John and I would talk about the big picture and what it’s about, heartbreaks, mistakes etc and then we’d build the sound around that emotion or theme. Sometimes it starts with a beat, sometimes with a line. I love finding that moment where the song suddenly clicks and feels like me. I like to lead with the intention of the song and what I’m writing about and then the structure follows and flows naturally.
Describe “Don’t Talk Feelings” in one sentence.
A heartbreak recovery album disguised as a dance party.
Are there any artists that inspire your music or that you look up to professionally?
Definitely. I’ve always been inspired by women who mix vulnerability with power, similar to Dua Lipa’s precision, Stevie Nicks’ raw storytelling, Olivia Dean’s warmth, and Lianne La Havas’ soul. I love artists who can make you cry and dance in the same song. That’s kind of my sweet spot too, I want to make music that makes you feel something, even when you’re pretending you don’t.
When you aren't writing or performing music, what are you usually getting up to?
I’m probably either producing something random, acting, or creating little projects. I’m a creative through and through. When I do switch off, I love hanging out with my friends, catching gigs, or enjoying a long dinner!
What do you love about the Australian music industry? And what’s something you want to see more of?
What I love most is the sense of community, there’s such a realness to Australian artists. We’re not afraid to be a little weird or a little raw, and I think that’s our superpower. What I’d love to see more of is support for emerging artists and more opportunities where Australian artists are celebrated. There’s so much talent here, but it can be hard to be seen unless you fit neatly into a box. I’m here to break a few of those boxes open.
