A Quick Chat with blue diner.

You released your debut album, Disc 2, earlier this year. Now that it’s had some time out in the world, how are you feeling about the record and the response to it so far?
The response has been awesome, we’re so grateful for all the kind words and messages from everyone! It felt like a weight off our shoulders when we first put out the record and now it feels surreal to hear people connecting with songs that mean so much to us as well.

A debut album can feel like a huge statement of who you are as a band. What do you think Disc 2 taught you about blue diner. and the kind of music you want to keep making?
I think one thing we all learnt was not chasing perfection. We had a limited amount of time to record the album and we really wanted to get some new music out and you can spend so long trying to perfect every little thing but we realised that it’s not practical and little imperfections can actually give more life to the music.

You’re heading to BIGSOUND off the back of that debut album. What does playing a showcase like BIGSOUND mean to you at this stage of blue diner.’s journey?
BIGSOUND is something we’ve always wanted to be a part of. It’s always a really fun week to go along to and watch a bunch of your favourite bands everyday, so actually playing this year is pretty awesome. We’re mostly just super keen to meet new people and show our music to some new audiences.

For people discovering blue diner. for the first time at BIGSOUND, what do you hope they take away from seeing you live? Is there a different side of the band that comes through on stage compared to the recordings?
A lot of our music is written specifically to be played and listened to live. We write the songs for a live performance and then often alter them slightly for recordings. We use a lot of dynamics to give the songs even more life and make the set almost feel like a journey for the audience so hopefully people enjoy that.

After BIGSOUND, you’ll be heading back into the creative process and starting to work on new music. Without anything set in stone just yet, are there any ideas, influences or directions you’re excited to explore next?
There are a few unreleased songs we’ve been sitting on for a while which we’re keen to rework and tie in with some new songs. We’ve all been listening to a lot of new music since Disc 2, so it will be fun to see how that influences our next project, but we find most of our songs come from playing together spontaneously without any strict direction.

Does BIGSOUND feel like a chance to close the chapter on Disc 2, or do you see it more as a stepping stone into whatever comes next for blue diner.?
In a way it does feel like the end of a small chapter. It’s the last run of shows we’re going to do for a little while which all started with our album tour earlier this year so it feels a little like the whole Disc 2 album journey is coming to a close and giving us a fresh slate for the next project.
