A Quick Chat with Sooks
Congrats on your new release, 'Take It Slow'. Can you tell us about the inspiration and process of creating it? Did you approach the creation of it any differently than you have with your previous tracks?
‘Take It Slow’ was written in the Summer of 2024, a couple of weeks before we were set to play our very first festivals over New Year’s. It was a big time for the band, and we were obviously so stoked to be playing on a big stage, but at the same time, it was so new for us. From paying for flights, accommodation and other expenses, we were far from making a profit, and we were all really stressed about how things would go. The cost-of-living crisis was really getting to us. This, amid most of us still at uni and working, was a lot and pushed us to the brink. But as cliché as it might sound, having each other and sharing this experience really brought us closer and brought out the other side.
Ultimately, the song is about not letting life dim your shine and doing what you feel you’re meant to do, despite the roadblocks life puts in your way. The chorus – it’s a meditation. It’s a mantra. Take it slow. Take it slow. Take it slow… and you’ll pull through. It’s about telling your own story in your own way and keeping your head up when you feel really down.
Sonically, we approached this song as we usually do, with Corey writing the track acoustically, and all of us adding our parts over time as we fleshed it out as a band in practice.
I've heard you're announcing a new EP. How long has that been in the works? How have you found things different compared to your first EP, Oyster Boy?
We’ve been working on this new EP for around a year, recording all six songs in two-song batches up the coast with our producer, Jack. We’ve definitely evolved as a band since our last EP. We’ve all matured as people and as musicians, so naturally, our songs are a bit deeper, and we’ve drifted away from our old juvenile sound. It’s real and upfront.
For new listeners, what other artists would you compare your sound to? How has it been working with Jack Nigro, who has an extensive list of credentials in this space for Australian bands?
I find it hard to describe our sound, to be honest. I guess we sound like if The Strokes, Spacey Jane and Rum Jungle had a three-way baby, haha.
We love working with Jack Nigro. He’s so good at bringing a song to life and really brings out the best in all of us. And he’s honestly such a good human being too. Love ya, Jack.
You've previously supported the likes of Le Shiv and Daily J. What can fans expect to see from your live shows?
We love playing live shows. It’s why we do what we do to be honest. Nothing feels better than walking out on a stage and playing for the fans. We always bring lots of energy to our shows and honestly just love meeting new people from all walks of life who have come to watch us.
Are there any touring plans for 2026 you can share with us?
2026 is gonna be a big year for us. We’re planning a tour for the release of our new EP, so it’s gonna be mega. Stay tuned.
