A Quick Chat with Lucienne

Rebirth feels like an important new chapter for you. What does the song mean to you?
Each release I’ve done so far has felt like casting a spell… this release has certainly lived up to its name and has already brought with it massive changes to my inner world. On top of that, it feels like an introduction to an aspect of my musical style that I’m really excited to build on.  

The song explores letting go of shame. Was there a particular moment that sparked that idea?
There was a recurring dream that I was having frequently at the time that I wrote it, that I mention in the song. After repeatedly waking up with this feeling of dread and interpreting it - I was led to explore the shame hiding in my subconscious that I have around a lot of my past. It’s been really special to assimilate with a lot of those struggles through developing a new lense of forgiveness and self love.  

Your music brings together soul, folk, alternative rock and cinematic pop. How would you describe your sound to someone hearing you for the first time?
Mystic sparkle-soul, with a generous helping of real-world grit. 

You recently supported Crowded House and Thelma Plum with just your guitar and vocals. What was that experience like?
Honestly as you would expect; one of the best days of my life. It was my second ever solo show actually, and I only found out 7 days before that I had the slot so the whole thing felt like a dream. Any fear I had leading up to it was completely outweighed by the immense joy and gratitude I felt to be there. 

The mantra “Om mani padme hum” has a really personal connection to your childhood. How did it find its way into Rebirth?
I grew up in a household that played a lot of bhajans (indian devotional music) and this particular mantra was one of my favourites. It loosely translates to ‘Praise be the jewel in the lotus’. For me it’s become a really important part of releasing shame, and honouring the part of myself that, like the lotus rising through the mud, remains pure always.

You’ve got the Golden Age Cinema premiere and full-band performance coming up. What are you most excited for people to experience?
I’m honestly just ecstatic to finally share this music video. I feel like it will not only give people an opportunity to know me better as an artist, but as a woman. It feels like a whole new stage of vulnerability and I’m excited to start experimenting with more world building around my music.  I’m also going to have one of Sydney’s best Cellists, Lily Innis, joining me in my band - as well as special guest Rose Cole performing her debut EP.
