A Quick Chat with RinRin

Congrats on the new song “Miss Miserable”, it’s a fantastic track! Who is Miss Miserable to you and tell us how the song came together?

The inspiration came about during a very low point in my life. Funnily enough, my thoughts at the time made me think, ‘hey, these could be good lyrics!’ Miss Miserable I’d say is my younger self who also had those same low moments, the person I was before RinRin.

Who did you record and produce the track with? What was the process like bringing a song like this to them?

Ryan Botha of Addax Studios. Before working on a new song with any producer, I’d normally compose something rough, add a melody and lyrics. For Miss Miserable in particular, I collaborated with my guitarist, James Judges, who sent me a rough guitar demo and I added lyrics, a melody, and the rest of the spice. Then, we handed that over to Ryan.

Miss Miserable has a very nostalgic pop punk feel to it, how important is that influence to you when blending it into your music?

Yeah I totally intended it to be nostalgic as the song is about being a troubled and depressed youth. Growing up, I’d listen to a lot of Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, Flyleaf, all from my dad’s hand-me-down iPod shuffle. I had no idea how to put or remove music from it so I’d just listen to the same artists on repeat. My tastes expanded as I grew up, of course, but those early days I still cling onto and it showed through Miss Miserable.

You have explored many different styles in your music since you began releasing back in 2020, what have you been listening to lately and what sounds can we expect to hear with future singles?

My songwriting style recently has been very different compared to how I used to write back then. It’s more bold, heavy, and it explores different genres mixed with metal (my favourite genre of all time and I shall never part with it, on God). I have been heavily inspired by a lot of my friends’ and their band’s music after watching multiple life changing shows. It’s bands like them I am glad to have met because we share the same love for metal but not strictly keeping it traditional, and love to change it up with the occasional rap verses, dance breaks and beat drops in their songs.

If there was one show or video game you would love to have your music be the soundtrack for, what would it be?

Definitely Valorant. I’ve actually recently produced a new song over east with Chris Lalic of Windwaker in the studio, a song that sounds like it could be from Valorant with the beat drop at the end (but with metal of course). So far it Is the song I am most excited to release.

Have you got any plans this year to tour across Australia? What is it like touring outside of your home city of Perth?

Nothing solid so far.

Can you tell us anything more about new music to come from RinRin in 2024? Have you been working with anyone in particular?

There’s a new EP I’ve been working on with Chris Lalic of Windwaker. I wrote most of the songs in it while I was hospitalized and it represents various aspects of that journey and what went on in my head. Writing throughout this time was really therapeutic because I was able to write with no pressure or disturbance and expressing myself with this kind of creative outlet was relieving.
