A Quick Chat with Evie Williams
eanjin/Brisbane-based indie folk artist, Evie Williams, returns with Heather Court. This hazy daydream of a number is built on loose drums, fuzzy guitars and Evie’s soft, feather light vocals. This moody palette has Evie reflecting on the gap between the life she imagined and the one she was living, capturing the ache of self-sabotage with striking honesty. Evie leans inward here, threading spoken word, dreamy riffs and melancholic glow into a track that lingers long after it ends. We caught up with Evie to talk about the single, the story behind it, and more.
Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?
Heather Court is a song about self-sabotage. It is the name of an old apartment block that I had visions of living in one day, with a beautiful balcony, a cat and a romanticised life. I would drive past and wonder how I would ever make a life like that. It highlights the feeling of wasted potential and indecisiveness that comes with being in your 20s, when you don’t know what your future will look like.
Who are some of your influences, and why?
I am loving Sydney Ross Mitchell at the moment. Her understated delicacy has really influenced my writing and recording recently. I have always been a vocal melody and lyric-focused writer, and Sydney does it so well.
What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?
My creative process is usually the same each time, starting with a feeling or experience I want to sit with and process. Often, a word or phrase comes to mind that drives the theme of the song. I then find chords and a melody that tells the story with conviction, and I usually can’t walk away until it’s done. I then send it to my band for feedback, and the recording process starts at my drummer’s home studio!
What do you think makes a great song?
Heartbreak.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Mallrat. The way she integrates her sonic and visual elements to create an entire world you can lose yourself in is inspiring.
When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?
I love to crochet! I started two years ago as a way to unwind and be creative at the same time, and now all of my friends have crochet bucket hats and bags they didn’t ask for.
Who are some local bands we should check out?
There is so much amazing local talent right now, but ‘Allora’ and ‘Neish’ both just released some of my favourite songs of theirs to date.
Winter or summer and why?
Summer for the holidays, last-minute plans and girls’ nights out.
Now that we are at the end of 2025, what do you have planned for next year?
So much music. I have been writing and recording more than ever, and I can’t wait to share what my amazing band and I have been working on. In the meantime, I hope you love Heather Court!
