Review: Groovin The Moo - Bunbury, 2017

Groovin the Moo 2017 ended its festival tour with a sold out show in Bunbury WA on Saturday 13th of May and like previous years the line up included a number of national and international acts. Anyone who has attended to Groovin the Moo Bunbury before would tell you to prepare yourself for an extremely cold night. However this year although slightly overcast during the day the rain held off, and the night was as still as anything. Possibly the best weather GTM Bunbury has seen in years.

One of the first acts we saw was Amy Shark, who managed to pack out the Moolin Rouge tent so early on in the day, and that shouldn’t have been a surprise considering she made #2 in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2016. Following Amy Shark in the Moolin Rouge tent were Northeast Party House. The boys from Melbourne exceeded my expectations and delivered an energetic, up beat performance and closed their set with their big hit Youth Allowance. This really kicked in the excitement and anticipation for what was still to come throughout the day.

Heading over to the main stage, we were graced with mesmerizing voice of Montaigne who left the crowd wanting more. Picking things up a little were Aussie punk rockers The Smith Street Band who ripped through an epic set list which included more recent tracks ‘Death to the Lads’ and ‘Birthdays’, With lead singer Wil Wagner smashing out the vocals.

Again on the main stage, it was now time for Tash Sultana. The singer-songwriter from Melbourne blew the crowd away with her souring vocals and unbelievable talent. Her stage presence was something else, and the way she worked around a number of instruments was incredible. Crowd favorites were her two hit singles – Notion and Jungle.

Later in the evening we saw Milky Chance take to the stage, and this was the highlight for me. The German folk band played an epic set which included all their hits – Stolen Dance, Flash Junk Mind, Ego, Blossom, and probably their biggest single from the Blossom album, Cocoon. They boys radiated good vibes into the audience and had everyone dancing the night away.

As always, The Wombats were crowd favorites and delivered a flawless set. The English rock band has toured a few Australian Music Festivals now but from the second they take the stage and play their massive indie-pop classics, we can’t get enough of them. They closed their set with a huge bang, ending with ‘Let’s Dance To Joy Division’, which had the crowd go crazy.

Closing the night was Dillon Francis, and for me this was the first time seeing the American DJ and producer and he definitely delivered. Playing a jam-packed set including hits, Anywhere, Coming Over and Get Low. As per his ‘Banger or Nah’ interview with Pedestrian TV, Dillon Francis closed his already epic set with Daryl Braithwaite’s classic ‘The Horses’ – And judging from the energy radiating from the crowd and one of the best crowd singalongs I’ve seen in a long time I think it’s safe to say there was no better way to end the night.
