A Quick Chat with Daezy
Congrats on the release of your ‘Hot Girl Summer’! Can you tell us a bit more about the song’s meaning?
Thank you!
(Daisy) ‘Hot Girl Summer’ came from a time when it felt like everything in my world was falling apart a little bit. A lot was happening all at once, and the lyrics are drawn from real things I was experiencing at the time. I was on the phone to a friend one day, venting about everything that was going on, and she said, ‘At least you’re still a hot girl in the summer.’ For some reason, that line just stuck with me.
It felt like the perfect example of using humour to turn a bad situation into something a little lighter, and that mindset genuinely helped me cope with what was happening. I went straight to Jackson’s house afterwards and we started writing. He really encouraged me to lean into the irony of ‘Hot Girl Summer’, and from there the song took on a life of its own. What started as a throwaway comment became a song about finding moments of joy, confidence and perspective when things aren't going to plan.
How did Daezy form?
(Daisy) I’d played AFLW for a long time as a professional athlete, but towards the end I’d lost my love for the game. During the COVID lockdowns, I found myself spending more time at the piano and completely fell in love with the possibilities of songwriting and making music.
Eventually footy came to an end, and I made the decision to semi-retire and pursue music instead, which is still one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’d known Josh, our bassist, for a while, and after booking a gig at Bar Open on a bit of a whim, he encouraged me to head over to Jackson’s place and have a jam. Josh and Jackson were living together at the time, and Jackson and I clicked immediately. The three of us played our first-ever gig together, alongside Jackson’s housemate, who wasn't even a drummer but jumped on the kit for the show. Somehow, it just worked.
Joe, who plays keys with us, has remained a session player since the start and is a longtime friend of Jackson’s. Our drummer Jack came into the picture later after meeting Jackson overseas. Looking back, the way the band came together feels pretty unlikely, and we feel incredibly fortunate that it all happened the way it did.
What’s your favourite show you’ve played so far?
We all would probably have different answers for this one so:
Daisy: The Forum opening for the Rions was an amazing experience. The people that were around the show, the performance itself and to have the experience with my best friends was amazing. Our recent tour for our last EP was also amazing, in particular the Sydney show where there were genuine fans in the crowd singing our songs to us. It was a surreal experience.
Jackson: Playing at Beyond The Valley was truly magical. I feel like it’s such a staple within the Australian music landscape and it was an honour to be able to play. It was definitely memorable for sure. I think it must have been like 37 degrees, we were all very sweaty. We were lucky we had a good crowd who were down to have a bit of fun. Never forget!!
Josh: The Forum. It’s such an iconic venue and to go from being in that crowd screaming to playing up on stage almost didn’t feel real. A definite top five life experiences for me.
Jack: Our headline show at the Northcote Social Club was such a special night. To have all of our friends and family there who have supported us since the beginning felt like a real full circle moment.
Which artists are on your high rotation playlist right now?
Daisy: Leon, Muna, Last Dinner Party, Wolf Alice.
Josh: Sam Fender, The Royston Club, Olivia Dean, Pacific Avenue.
Jackson: Pulp, Velvet Trip, The Lazy Eyes, Scott Walker.
Jack: Swapmeet, Supertramp, Francis of Delirium and Parcels.
What TV show are you bingeing at the moment?
Daisy: Off-Campus!
Josh: The Boyz / Invincible.
Jackson: The Burroughs.
Jack: Alien Earth.
What was the first gig / concert you ever went to?
Daisy: J-Lo 2012. An amazing concert!
Josh: J Cole 2017 4 Your Eyes Only Tour.
Jackson: Robbie Williams 2006. The king himself.
Jack: The Wiggles!
Plans for the rest of the year?
We have a few support slots coming up that haven’t been announced yet. We are super pumped for them, as well as a fun show coming up in August in Sydney (TBA). We have a bunch of exciting music coming out, which we cannot wait for everyone to hear, and our biggest show yet towards the end of the year. Busy times ahead but we cannot wait!
