What’s next for Caspia?

Congrats on the release of your debut single ‘Alone’. It seems like the perfect song of the moment! Did you write it as an ode to self- isolation?

No this was written over the past 2 years about exploring our connection with ourselves and what it means to be alone. To be true to who you are and honour how you feel. Self-isolation has provided the perfect place for ‘Alone’ to exist and finds its way into people’s lives.

You’re also in the band Caravana Sun, why have you decided to go out on your own?

For me, there were things I needed to express that I couldn’t do in Caravãna Sun. Music and songs suit a certain listening style and place. For me, there was ways I wanted this music produced that felt just wouldn’t fly with our high energy live performances. We have such a beautiful community in Caravãna Sun, I felt I had to honour that and move these songs to a different space.

Is there a story behind your name Caspia? What does it mean?

The name came from going down the Latin name list of birds in my twitching book of Australian birds. Being a bird nerd myself, I’ve always wanted to find something in that world that could represent this music. When I stumbled across the Hydroprogne Caspia aka Caspian Tern, I knew it was the right one for the music.

The song was produced by Joel Quartermain from Eskimo Joe, how did you meet each other? Have you worked together before?

Yes, Joel is an absolute legend and all round one of the most talented songwriters/ producers I’ve ever worked with. Joel produced a Caravãna Sun record in 2016 and I knew in that studio, that there was more music to be had between us. Very proud of what we have created here.

The video for ‘Alone’ is very dark and brooding, tell us about the making of it?

With a great vision lead by Sam Brumby as director, we spent the hours between 10:30pm and 3:30am around the southern Sydney beaches (Stanwell Park). The music set the tone, we just needed to find what was going to work visually. I was blown away with some of the shots we got and super proud of the outcome in the end

 What’s next for Caspia?

More music, performing and connecting to people. It’s been amazing to feel the love and support from people and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
