REVIEW: Linkin Park - Rod Laver Arena – Melbourne

Written by: Lachlan Bradford

On Tuesday night, Rod Laver Arena belonged to Linkin Park.

Not a spare seat in the building. A giant countdown clock ticked down ten minutes before showtime while the crowd buzzed like it already knew what was coming. When the band hit the stage the opening songs ripped the joint apart immediately. No warm-up lap. Just 15,000 people jumping from the first note.

The biggest surprise was “Two Faced,” which absolutely went off live. The production wrapped around it perfectly and the crowd responded straight away. Emily Armstrong had the audience in the palm of her hand all night, huge presence and smart with the big screams, saving them for the moments that really landed. Mr. Hahn wandered around the stage snapping photos of the crowd like he was documenting the chaos from inside it, and the Fort Minor throwbacks were a great little nostalgia hit for longtime fans.

Then the hits just kept coming. “A Place for My Head” went hard, “Bleed It Out” had a full circle pit spinning on the floor, and Rod Laver sang just about every word back. The encore was flawless: “Papercut,” “In the End,” and “Faint.” Three monsters to close a show that barely paused for breath. Linkin Park have always had one of the deepest catalogues in modern rock, and on a Tuesday night in Melbourne it felt like the entire arena knew every single one of them.
