REVIEW: I Prevail – John Cain Arena – Melbourne
Written by: Rhys Carman
For a Thursday night in Melbourne, John Cain Arena was absolutely packed as I Prevail proved once again why they’re one of the biggest names in modern metal. Supported by Imminence and Invent Animate, the night was stacked from start to finish.
Imminence brought the heat early with their dark, gothic-infused metalcore, blending crushing heaviness with haunting melodies that sent goosebumps up the back of your neck. Invent Animate kept the momentum rolling before the arena erupted for the main event.
I’ve always thought of I Prevail as the Backstreet Boys of metalcore, massive choruses everyone can sing along to, mixed with guttural screams and breakdowns heavy enough to shake the building. The crowd was a diverse mix of die-hard metalheads, younger fans and families, all feeding off the energy. Shoeys were getting done on stage, which is always a classic, circle pits were opening up, and the atmosphere felt more like a Saturday night than a work night.
Every burst of fire and pyro was timed perfectly to the biggest breakdowns of the night, adding another layer to an already explosive performance. Melbourne showed up in force and I Prevail delivered exactly what everyone came for: huge riffs, massive singalongs, relentless energy and a reminder that few bands in modern metal put on a live show quite like they do.
For a Thursday night, it doesn’t get much better than that.
