REVIEW: Hudson Freeman – The Toff, Melbourne

Written by: Lachlan Bradford

There are gigs where everyone’s watching.

Then there are gigs where everyone knows they’re witnessing the start of something.

The Toff in Town felt like the latter on Thursday night as Hudson Freeman played his first ever Australian headline show, less than 24 hours after landing and repeatedly reminding the crowd he was “barely alive.” Jet lag or not, he looked right at home.

Opening duties went to Local the Neighbour, armed with an electric guitar and a sharp sense of humour. The songs landed, but it was the between-song banter that really won people over, setting the room up perfectly.

When Freeman took the stage, there was no oversized entrance or forced theatrics. He was unassuming, almost understated, which only made what followed hit harder. Within minutes, the packed room was locked in, mesmerised by intricate guitar work and a voice that never tried to oversell itself. No unnecessary runs, no overcooked moments, just control, feel and confidence.

That restraint became the superpower of the set. The quiet moments mattered most. You could feel the room leaning in.

Mid-set surprise “If You Know Me” got one of the biggest reactions of the night, while newer songs hinted at an artist still climbing fast. “Mommy Jesus” stood out too, delivered with the kind of conviction that makes people stop filming and start paying attention.

What made the night memorable wasn’t just the songs, it was the shared sense that something was happening in real time. The kind of show people will mention later with “I saw him before…”

For a first headline show in Australia, it felt like a statement. Especially with support slots for Mumford & Sons already on deck.

He closed with “Give Faith,” sending the room out buzzing.

Hudson Freeman might’ve arrived barely alive.

He left Melbourne looking very much alive and on the verge.
