dave | ‘YOCH! Bangers Vol. 1’ | EP Review

“It’s Friday; chuck on dave’s ‘YOCH! Bangers Vol. 1’ EP, and watch the old school skate/surf movie montage materialize before your eyes.”

For fans of Skegss and Dune Rats, Newcastle four piece, dave, are back with a brand new 7 track EP, full of high energy garage rock, with just a dash of vulnerability.

There’s a certain nostalgia laced across the EP, tapping into an almost Red Hot Chili Peppers, or even Blink 182-vibe, depending on the track. ‘Take It All’ channels the energy of Circa Waves, while still tapping into something a little older, while ‘Through To You’ packs a similar punch, its opening guitar riff eliciting RHCP comparisons.

‘Eggiwegs’ is a real favourite of mine, in particular its lyrics. Although it’s one of the more simplistic offerings on the release, its lyrics seem to revel in the mundane, just like those of Alex Lahey and The Football Club.

With a lot of bands in this genre falling into the trap of leaving their tracks too sparse, dave’s EP is surprisingly fleshed out, proving they’re well ahead of the game. If this is the standard they’re giving us in an EP, bring on the album, I say.

‘YOCH! Bangers Vol. 1’ is out today via YOCH! Records
