A Quick Chat with Torizon

Torizon interview New Million

Meanjin/Brisbane petalcore trailblazers Torizon are gearing up to release their debut concept EP Meliora on Friday, September 19. Although new to the scene, the band has been carving a space for themselves throughout 2025, with a string of emotive singles spotlighting the group in the heavy music community. From laudable features in Music Feeds, Backseat Mafia, The Music, Ramona Magazine, to placements on Apple Music Breaking Hard Rock, The Riff (AU/NZ), New In Rock (AU/NZ) and Bring The Noise (NZ) editorial playlists, spins on triple j, Unearthed, and community stations nationwide, Torizon’s momentum is undeniable.

Known for their high-energy live performances, Torizon have packed out hometown headliners and shared stages with homegrown heavyweights like Circles, Valhalore, The Last Martyr, These Four Walls and NTH RD. This October, they’ll launch their first headline tour with Naarm/Melbourne’s alt-metallers New Million, performing across the Aussie East Coast.

Before they hit the road together, Torizon’s frontwoman, Mish Sharma, sat down with New Million’s Bassist Callum Doig for a candid chat about life on stage, surviving the grind of being an independent musician, and what fans can expect when the two bands collide.

How did New Million come about? Does the name have a special meaning?
“New Million was formed in 2019 right before the pandemic by Alex and his childhood friend Tarsh who some may remember as our original drummer. The name New Million initially came from Tarsh, and there wasn't a particularly deep or meaningful reason as to why we eventually settled on that name, we were just looking at making something ‘New’ and big, and I guess it just resonated with us. The band is still relatively young, so it may be a while until we realise what ‘New Million’ could potentially mean to us; we evolve with every release, and what the name means to us evolves with it.”

Does your band also have a bromance? Because I'm the NPC fourth wheel in my band
“Always! Nothing will bring you closer like sharing the same bed in a cramped motel before driving to our next venue all day. We all have quite different personalities, which lets us approach each new release with a fresh perspective.”

With an abundance of amazing bands at grassroots and emerging levels, what made you jump on our tour?
“We've all been fans of Torizon for a while, so of course we would jump on board! We are so grateful and excited to be able to extend our tendrils out and are able to actually go visit people that may not have heard of us on the east coast. We are super hopeful that this can lead to a beneficial relationship where we become regulars of Brissy. It’s such a wonderful place with a scene that definitely deserves more recognition.”

What are your tour must-haves?
“The most important thing we bring is our attitude; professionalism, treating every single show as if it is the biggest we’ve ever done, and respect for the other artists, the crowd that has taken the time out of their day to come out, and all the staff that makes this possible. I suppose our instruments are also up there in terms of tour must-haves.”

I'm always anxious about the talking between songs part. Any tips (help me please)?
“Absolutely! On our tour with Ilyira and Russian Novel at the start of the year, I was trembling the first night in Newcastle! But as soon as I stood on that stage, it all melted away. Dealing with imposter syndrome is part of making New Million a success; part of making any band a success in my opinion. It might never go away, but every night after that first night showed me that we can take it further; we were tighter and performed better every single night! Will we be nervous before our upcoming shows with Torizon? Yes. But we will pull through, and utilise these feelings to draw out the best performance we possibly can. I can’t wait.”

Should we come up with a cool pre-show ritual for October? What should it be?
“Hell yes! But let’s keep it simple, like a bizarre ritual only we understand, maybe involving interpretive dance, chanting our favourite snack’s name, or a weird group scream that scares the neighbours. If we survive that, the show’s basically won before it starts.”

How the hell are we going to play Sydney and Melbourne shows within 24 hours? I'm going to need a personal caffeine IV
“We love what we do. We're super excited and feel very privileged to be playing outside of our home city so come hell or highwater, we will be there. A caffeine IV doesn't sound too bad though…”

We love ‘Vices’ and ‘Health’ - what inspired the themes and sounds for these tracks?
“Thank you! Historically we were definitely heavier and leaned into our deathcore and prog rock roots. But as we were discovering our identity as a band, we eventually realised that what resonated with us, was being more true to ourselves. I (Jack, Lead Vocals) trialled out putting my true feelings and experiences into the lyrics and what we got back was, well, real. Vices is a semi-autobiographical piece that touches on how I lived earlier in my life. I regret it, as you should be able to tell in the song. Health is, while not autobiographical, still a representation of a past experience I had that impacted me deeply. What we’ve found is that being authentic and drawing deep from our actual lived experiences lets us provide a great platform to share and connect with our audience on a deeper level.”

What snacks should we bring for you?
“Bring us something that screams Brisbane! We're all coffee snobs from Melbourne but we're coming in with an open mind.”

Your turn, ask us anything!

Out of all bands to support you, why us?
“We genuinely dig your music, you seem like an absolute blast to tour with, and it’s a great stylistic match.”

Parmi or Parma? There is a correct answer.
“Parma or bust”
