A Quick Chat with The Wanted Gems

Can you tell us a little about the recording process for 'Scarf'

The recording journey for "Scarf" was a delightful adventure! Unlike our usual process, this track took on a more experimental approach, starting with the lyrics and a basic tune, leading us to discover guitar chords that almost eluded us initially. However, persistence paid off, and we eventually uncovered the foundation for the song.

Once in the studio, we delved into a world of creative exploration, blending various guitar melodies, synths, and drumbeats. This departure from our usual indie/pop style into a pop/rock fusion added an exciting dimension to our music-making process. Collaborating with producers Ethan French and Noah Shilkin, we crafted not just "Scarf" but a total of four tracks during this session.

The process was a blend of remote collaboration, with ideas and vibes flowing from Alice Springs to Perth, where the tracks took shape under the expert hands of Noah and Ethan after receiving our vocal/guitar demo. The culmination came at Crank Studios, where we tracked vocals, added overdubs, percussion, and even ukulele parts, infusing each element with the organic essence that defines our music.

Can you tell us a little bit about background and influence?

"Scarf" is a dynamic blend of pop and rock, woven with a compelling narrative that dives into the depths of past romance. Crafted by lyricist Micaela and harmonized by her twin sister Madison, the song's genesis stemmed from a vivid dream in Micaela's subconscious.

As the story unfolds, we find Micaela immersed in a moment of waiting and longing, symbolized by the creation of a crotched scarf for her partner. This act of crafting becomes intertwined with the haunting melody of the chorus, capturing the essence of yearning and frustration.

The bridge of "Scarf" offers glimpses into desired affection and emotional connection, resonating with listeners on a deeply personal level. It delves into the complexities of relationships, reflecting on the universal experience of waiting for change that may never come, ultimately highlighting the bittersweet interplay between hope and disillusionment.

At its core, "Scarf" embodies resilience and self-discovery. Born from a dream yet grounded in reality, this pop-rock anthem encourages introspection and empowerment, urging listeners to embrace its message of understanding when it's time to move on. Drawing from Micaela's own experience of a four-year relationship filled with promises and hopes for change, the song's essence is encapsulated in the powerful realization: "if he wanted to, he would." This poignant reflection serves as a reminder to prioritize self-worth and emotional well-being, offering a beacon of wisdom to those navigating the complexities of love and relationships.

What's a unique story about this release?

A fascinating tale behind this song is its origin in a dream. Upon waking, the vivid details were swiftly captured in notes, which became the catalyst for its creation. What began as an idea transformed into a head-banging melody, with the bridge emerging first, setting the stage for the rest of the song to effortlessly unfold.

Had it not been for the experience and breakup that inspired it, this song might have remained confined to those initial notes. Instead, it blossomed into a powerful musical expression, showcasing the transformative journey from dream to reality, and from heartache to artistic triumph.
