A Quick Chat with Terror Parade
What sparked the concept behind “The Exorcist”?
We wanted the song to relay the message that no one can be completely rid of their inner thoughts and demons, they always come back when you least expect them to.
How important was the twist of the exorcist actually planting evil?
We wanted the song to have a twist. Normally an exorcism would remove the evil spirit, but this Exorcist inflicts the demonic spirit. We want to make people believe they are going to be saved, but really the Exorcist is the one continuing to infect victims with more evil.
The track has a raw, tribal energy. Was that intentional from the beginning?
The track evolved in the practice room. I said to Daniel, our drummer, “Can you get your kick drum to follow my guitar?” Once we had that down, the whole thing came together. From there, we didn’t really change much. I drew some inspiration from Kiss Detroit Rock City with the opening drum roll intro, and I also wanted the middle 8 drum section to sound a bit like Peter Criss’ drum solo on the Kiss Alive album.
Parts of this song date back to 2015. Why bring it back now?
Yes, the lyrics, excluding the chorus which is new, came from a song I wrote back in 2015. The song was okay, but it never really felt finished, so we shelved it. The riff also came from another old song we don’t play anymore, so it ended up being a combination of two older ideas with a new chorus.
How does “The Exorcist” sit alongside tracks like “Hollywood Dead” and “Revolution”?
Hollywood Dead and Revolution are also built around tribal style drum beats. I drew a lot of inspiration from Marilyn Manson across all three tracks, so together they give a strong representation of the band’s core sound.
The video strips things back to a live performance feel. What did you want fans to take away from that?
Normally our videos tell a story and have a lot of different scenes, so this time around we wanted to show fans what they will get at a Terror Parade live show, high energy and a full, in your face performance.
