A Quick Chat with Soup on Tap
What are the origins of Soup on Tap? Where did it start?
Soup on Tap began in 2022, formerly known as Middle St, in Melbourne. The story goes back further though, to when Oscar and Alex began busking together at the age of 14 before forming a local band with friends in Albury. After gigging around town, they crossed paths with Felix’s band and became friends. Once finishing high school they all moved to Melbourne, where Alex met Finn while working together. The four bonded, jammed, and eventually found their unique chemistry while reworking an old demo Oscar and Alex had recorded called Woah, which went on to become their debut single.
Tell us a bit about the new single ‘Peach Tree’. What’s the story behind it?
The chords were written by Alex in 2021, and Oscar added a riff with more voice leading. The song had no direction at the time and was shelved until 2023, when a melody and lyrics finally emerged to bring it to life. The lyrics reflect the excitement of starting a new relationship and the fear and anxiety that come with it. It’s about confronting internal self-doubt, starting from level one, and being honest about what you want. A song about your best self.
— Oscar Dean
Are there any inspirations you look to beyond music when writing or performing?
For this EP a lot of the initial ideas came from vocalist Oscar Dean, who often draws from personal experiences of love and struggles with self-doubt. These stories sit on top of a melodic pop rock sound, as heard in Peach Tree. On When I Get a Feeling, Soup on Tap leans into a more alternative pop sound, further showcasing Oscar’s emotional and relatable songwriting.
