A Quick Chat with Scatter Light

Congrats on the release of ‘The View’! Can you tell us a bit more about what the song is about?

Hey thanks so much! The song is about those times where you can just allow yourself to fully relax and enjoy the moment. That could be driving down to the beach with the windows down or enjoying a sunset, whatever your flavour is!

Where was the music video shot and how does it reflect the song’s themes?

We shot the majority of the video down at sea cliff bridge just north of Wollongong and in the surrounding suburbs.

We thought that this would be a great location to reflect the feeling of the song and how we wanted the video to feel. A good friend of mine used to pick me up in his old Land Cruiser and we’d drive down to the beach in the morning for a morning swim before work. It was a beautiful time in our lives and the feeling of this song really reminds me heavily of that. As we were writing the song I had such a clear image of that car and those morning swims and we did our best to represent that feeling in the video.

There’s a clear shift in Scatter Light’s sound with this new single. How has your music evolved over the last year and what can we expect next?

I think Ollie and I have really turned a new leaf with our songwriting and production recently. The biggest change being that everything we’re making is self produced. I think the more we dive into this new chapter, the music we’re making feels the most ‘us’ it’s ever felt and I think this song is a perfect example of that.

Which artists are on your high rotation playlist right now?

Have definitely had a pretty wide range of stuff going recently! I’ve been pumping the new Nothing but Theives album Stray Dogs! There’s just so many bangers, definitely one to check out!

Other than that I’ve had a lot of my go to classic albums on repeat, Songs For the Deaf - Queens Of the Stone Age as well as those early Tame Impala records, you just can’t go wrong!

What TV show are you bingeing at the moment?

Honestly for me I’ve been watching more YouTube than tv shows recently! I’m currently down a rabbit hole of watching chess tutorials and trying to learn how to be decent at chess haha. Don’t ask me why but it’s a lot of fun, feels much healthier than scrolling and it’s absolutely peaking my attention span!

What was the first gig / concert you ever went to?

The first concert I remember going to I think was Queens of the Stone Age at the Hordern Pavillion in 2017. They were such a massive influence on me throughout my late teens and I remember buying tickets and looking forward to the show for months! I remember they had Royal Blood supporting as well who I was also a big fan of so it was a great night of music for young James.

Plans for the rest of the year?

Plans for the rest of the year I think mainly involve trying to finish as much music as possible for bigger things to come! Focusing on enjoying the process along the way, and the more summer rolls around, spending as much time as possible at the beach.
