A Quick Chat with Mongeeya
Congrats on the release of ‘Sea’! Can you tell us a bit more about the track?
‘Sea’ is dedicated to those shitty people in your life that you won’t ever get rid of, specifically colonists, exes and crap employers. An anthem to shout out with your friends ‘f*** you, you’re not forgiven.’ With fingers up in the air. An unfortunate universal experience but good to scream out loud!
Where did the name MONGEEYA originate from?
MONGEEYA is my traditional name from my tjamu, my pop. I named the band after my name as most of the stories we tell are ones I share from my experiences as an Aboriginal man living in this colony.
What’s your favourite show you’ve played so far?
There’s been a few great ones, playing at RTRFM’s Neon Picnic was a highlight but probably the best show was a recent one at Ngalak Nodje Bilya for NAIDOC week. Was so boss being surrounded by mob and rocking out!
Which artists are on your high rotation playlist right now?
Arcade Fire, King Stingray, Pendulum, The Pretty Littles, Kendrick Lamar, Gigi Perez, Gang of Youths, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Tia Gostellow, Thelma Plum, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and AURORA.
What TV show are you bingeing at the moment?
Currently smashing through Alien:Earth, so boss and have been playing catch up on From and Demon Slayer.
What was the first gig / concert you ever went to?
Uncle Archie Roach when I was a young fella in Walyalup (Fremantle) Kulcha Club!
Plans for 2025?
I have a 9 month old son so we’ve been laying a little low apart from our upcoming debut EP ‘Listen to This.’ Which is releasing October 14th. Taking gigs as they come so if there’s any coming, get us on board 💪🏽
