A Quick Chat with Magdalia

What is the inspiration for your new EP ‘Pieces of Me’?
‘Pieces of Me’ was written over five years and followed me through a lot of highs and lows. I wanted to release the record pretty much every year but there was always something stopping me. I received my autism and ADHD diagnosis in 2021 and had this new lens on my life and all this new information that I had to work through which inspired a lot of the songs and my creative process in general. The EP encompasses this 5-year period of my life and highlights everything I’ve been through, from that life-changing diagnoses, to my passion for Formula 1.

Is there a theme or central point within this record? Where did it grow from, and how did it come about?
I think the main theme is identity. As I said there were many highs and lows over the years I was writing the record but every song came back to that central idea of finding myself and reclaiming my identity.

You worked in the studio with Seetali Mack. What is that experience like for you?
I’ve known Seetali since we were both in school and it has been a real privilege to watch her take on the world. I knew I wanted to work with her when recording the EP and we even wrote one of the tracks - ‘Left for Dead’ - together, which was really exciting. She is so wonderful to work with and knows how to get the best out of you. You don’t really feel like you’re working because you’re just having fun!

Who or what are your influences and inspirations?
My main influence will always be Florence and the Machine, I’ve always loved listening to her music and have admired her voice since I was young. Recently I’ve been listening to Erin LeCount who is very Florence-esque and makes amazing experimental music that really hits you right in the heart.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2026?
I’m putting on a launch concert for the EP, April 18th at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, which will be supported by Kaiyah Mercedes and Kaylah Jordyn, along with some local singing students. I’m really excited about it because I haven’t performed much over the past year. For the rest of the year I’m looking forward to writing and collaborating more and hopefully releasing a couple of singles before the end of 2026.

What do you want listeners to walk away with from ‘Pieces of Me’?
I hope that they will feel understood and seen. The past few years have been difficult for so many people so I hope that this EP can bring comfort to people and also give them a couple of songs to scream to as well :)
