A Quick Chat with Isabel Rumble
Isabel Rumble returns with Hold Everything Lightly, a tender and transformative second album out now. The regional NSW indie folk artist embraces life’s quiet changes with grace, weaving delicate fingerpicked guitars, bowed strings, and soft piano into a sound that feels equal parts earthbound and ethereal. Guided by her warm, unguarded voice, Isabel explores growth, surrender, and the strength in vulnerability across ten beautifully textured tracks. It’s an album that invites stillness and reflection, reminding listeners to move through life with open hands and an open heart. Before she heads out on her 16-date tour, we caught up with Isabel to talk about the record, her process, and more.
Can you tell us what this Album means to you and what you want people to take away from it?
Hold Everything Lightly is a collection of songs from the heart. I hope it offers a moment to traverse the internal landscape and return to centre, stillness and presence.
What was the creative process like for you for this album, from writing through to recording?
Most of the songs flowed out over a few months of big transition and change in my life. They let me be more exploratory and brave, expansive and curious than my previous work. Recording was a cocoon of creativity, immersed in the coastal bush around Four Winds on the Sapphire Coast of NSW. It was a full circle moment to return to my home valley and record with musical mentors from my childhood.
What is your favourite song from the album, and why?
Hold Everything Lightly. It is a journey within which I find something new each time.
Are there any artists who were of particular influence throughout the making of this album?
So many. Scottish artist Rachel Sermanni. Always Joni Mitchell. Also a lot of mantra music from Indian yogic traditions.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Nils Frahm. Far from my stripped back acoustic singer-songwriter material, but I saw him play live at Dark Mofo in Tasmania a few years back and something in me was stirred! I'd love to expand into new territory, in particular vocally, and his live performance was something else.
When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?
I teach yoga, that can be very creative! Yin yoga in particular. I have always done creative things, and often think music just happens to be the best outlet for my creativity at the moment; for the connection, the touring, the collaboration and the solitude.
Who are some local bands we should check out?
Jamie Lena (Adelaide/Kaurna). Rupert Bullard (Tassie/lutruwita). Kris Mizzi (Melbourne/Naarm). Maddi O'Brien (Bellingen).
Winter or summer and why?
This will surprise everyone who knows me: Winter. As long as there is time to rest, drink plenty of tea, and curl up by a cosy fire. I find songwriting comes easier in the colder months. It's a time for dreaming.
What do you have planned for the rest of the year?
Tour! My biggest headline tour of Australia is happening through October and November. I'll be travelling many thousands of km's in my tour van, playing in major cities and many regional centres. It will be a series of both intimate solo and full band shows and I'm so excited!
