A Quick Chat With Idol Minds
Twin sisters, Mia and Ava Duggan-Sorbara are emerging on the pop music scene with their new stage name Idol Minds alongside their single ‘Needed You’. As their fourth single to date and their first under Idol Minds, the duo have showcased a variety of sounds and styles from blood-pumping and intoxicating electro-pop to gentle, ballad-like soul. Now, ‘Needed You’ (produced by Shane Jarvie-Kohn) navigates the modern complexities of love and relationships and understanding one's own identity within said relationship. Filled with heartfelt emotion the track is a tense and moody downtempo, RnB/Soul/Pop number with a belting finale. We caught up with the sister to find out more.
Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?
This song represents the complexities within a relationship and how it’s okay to prioritise yourself and your own wellbeing. It explores themes of independence self discovery and empowerment and conveying the message that it’s okay to walk away from toxic and destructive relationships. Overall I want my listeners to embrace self love and to be unafraid of letting go of what’s not meant for them anymore.
Who are some of your influences and why?
Our influence at the moment has to be Tones and I. We resonate so much with her as her songs are so powerful and represent such meaning and to us that’s what we strive to do with as musicians.
What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording? I (Ava) tend to write lyrics first and pick a theme to unpack while Mia tends to write the music first then later adding the lyrics regarding the feel of the song. We find that this works well for us as it’s a great way to share ideas and add our own spin on each song.
What do you think makes a great song?
To us a great song conveys raw authentic emotions that resonate with people on a deeper level whether its sadness, love, loss, anger or grief. To us the ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level is what sets apart truly impactful songs.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
We would absolutely love the opportunity to collaborate with Tones and I as she is one of our biggest inspirations and to create music with her would be an absolute dream come true.
When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have? When we’re not writing or composing music we love to engage in physical activity like going to the gym or running as it is a great way to clear our mind while also allowing new ideas to flow.
Who are some local bands we should check out?
We are definitely inspired by our amazing and talented friends! Their dedication and passion for music is such a motivation for us and it definitely encourages us to constantly drive for improvement so we can achieve great things with our music.
Winter or summer and why?
We absolutely love summer as we find it extremely inspiring. We love to take our writing journals to the park and write lyrics for hours.
