A Quick Chat With EDIE

Perth/Boorloo-based artist EDIE channels post-breakup fury and melancholy into her latest alt-indie anthem, 'Lie to Me'. The track melds grungy basslines, broody vocals, and sharp lyrics into a powerful expression of feminine rage and raw emotion. 'Lie to Me' is a dark, brooding counterpoint to EDIE's dance-ready repertoire, perfect for anyone looking to scream or hum away their heartache. We caught up with her to find out more about the track, her influences and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

‘Lie to Me’ deals with the lies an ex said to me and how my intuition was right all along! It explores the hurt and anger you feel after being lied to and it served as a really therapeutic outlet for me. ‘Lie to Me’ is all about trusting your gut and never doubting your intuition.

Who are some of the band's influences, and why?

Some big influences for me are Olivia Rodrigo and Gwen Stefani. I love how honest they are in their songwriting and what they stand for.

What's the creative process for the band, from writing through to recording?

Before I’ve written a song I always think of a music video or some sort of visual idea for it. It’s kind of a weird way to approach writing but I just get very inspired by the imagery and how I want the end product to look! So I have all these visions in my head and then I’m like “oh ok let me write it now!”

What do you think makes a great song?

For me it’s how it makes me feel, emotionally or physically or both! I think a great song can be one that makes me feel like dancing but also ones that have the ability to make me sob are so powerful too. If it makes me feel something then I think it’s great!

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

My absolute dream would be Harry Styles of course! I’ve loved him for so long and I think our voices would match nicely. I don’t know if I’d be able to keep myself together around him though I think I’d make a fool of myself…

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I love crocheting! I just put on some Supernatural or Gilmore Girls and crochet away. It’s quite relaxing and it still allows me to be creative.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

My bestie Siobhan Cotchin is amazing ! And I love Siena Rebelo and Coco Elise. There’s so much amazing music coming out of Perth/Boorloo at the moment!

Winter or summer and why?

I’m a winter girl because I just love the rain and getting cozy! I love winter clothing and in summer it’s just too hot and sweaty and it makes me angry hahaha!

What else do you have planned for 2024?

Lots of exciting things happening this year! Have an upcoming band launch on June 1st at the Rosemount Hotel in Perth! And a few more song surprise this year that I cannot wait to share!
