A Quick Chat with Charlotte Sands
Your debut album "Can We Start Over?" was released on January 24th. Could you share the process behind its creation?
A few months ago, I hadn't planned on releasing a full-length project. I traveled to LA and collaborated with songwriters/producers Jutes, Alex Nice, and Keith ‘Ten4’ Sorrells over three sessions. Each night leaving the studio, I thought, "That's my favorite song I've ever written!" The next day, we'd create something I loved even more. After three days, I had three records that felt like my best work. Despite their differences, they were all representative of who I am now. I knew they had to be released together.
What inspired the title "Can We Start Over?"
The title came to me while writing a song for the album about restarting a relationship or reintroducing oneself. I've evolved personally and professionally in recent years, and I embrace the idea of starting anew with the wisdom and experience I've gained. It's not about erasing the past but shedding previous versions of ourselves and embracing the present. This album reflects that notion — standing firm as the person I am today.
This is your first time in Australia. Besides touring, what are you most looking forward to during your visit?
I'm thrilled to explore each city and see places I've only seen in pictures. Meeting people in person whom I've known online for years is also incredibly exciting. I can't wait to experience it all.
Who's an Australian artist you're a huge fan of?
I'm a huge fan of G Flip. Their talent and versatility, particularly playing drums and singing simultaneously live, always impress me.
Your track "Dress" went viral on TikTok in 2020. What was that experience like, and why do you think it resonated with people?
The experience was surreal yet wonderful! "Dress" struck a chord because it's a simple pop song with a message of accepting people for who they are, defying societal norms. It celebrates self-expression while remaining fun, lighthearted, and danceable. I'm grateful for the song's reception as it brought together an amazing community.
Who was No.1 on your 2023 Spotify Wrapped?
Ryan Beatty! He's absolutely incredible, and if you're not familiar with him, you should definitely listen. He's also one of my favorite songwriters.
What has been the most memorable moment of your musical career so far?
Touring this album and headlining at various venues stands out as the most memorable moment. Interacting with fans over the years, witnessing their growth, and forming friendships worldwide has been an incredible experience. I feel fortunate to travel extensively and connect with people globally.
If you weren't pursuing music, what do you think you'd be doing?
Honestly, music has always been my sole focus, so I'm not sure what else I'd be doing. It's been my lifelong passion.
