A Quick Chat with Brazen Barbie
Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Aint No Dummy’?
Ain’t No Dummy came from those moments where you know better but do it anyway. It’s about being self-aware, but still playing the game. Sometimes we act reckless, but it doesn’t mean we’re naive. The song’s a contradiction: it’s playful, but there’s power in reclaiming the label.
What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
I’m drawn to artists who say the most with the least, who can flip words in clever ways or make you rewind just to catch what they really meant. That definitely shapes how I write. I’m obsessed with layering meaning, slipping in double entendres, and making bars feel sharp but still personal. I also pull a lot from my own life — real situations, real emotions — but I always find a way to say it with style.
What’s the creative process like for you?
I’m big on concepts and visualising the world of the song early. I create based on how I’m feeling, and what’s going on around me.
If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?
I’d change the lack of real support from the top. The talent and community are here, it’s not the artists or the audience that’s the problem — it’s the systems around us. Platforms like FBi Radio and some major blogs had to shut down because of funding, and that says a lot. The infrastructure that’s supposed to support emerging artists keeps crumbling.
What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
I’d probably be an athlete. I used to do track so maybe I’d be in the Olympics by now if I stuck with it. Not sure how fulfilled I would be now though haha.
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
Missy Elliott and Timbaland, hands down. They’re pioneers in every sense. Missy’s creativity is next level, and Timbaland’s production still sounds futuristic even decades later.
What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
Find your voice and guard it. People will try to mould you, but the thing that sets you apart is what makes you valuable. Your lane is yours for a reason.
Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
That’s a tough one… I’ve met some amazing people along the way! Right now, I just really value working with people who are passionate and intentional about what they do.
Any plans for a tour on the cards?
Things are definitely in the works! But my first show locally post mixtape is on the 12th of September at Laundry Bar which will be the first show of BRAZEN live!
