A Quick Chat with Blush
Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for ‘Embarrassed 4 U’?
I’ve had a handful of instances where friends or people I’ve just met would call me ‘exhausting’ or ‘too much’, and for a while it really bothered me to the point where I started to assume that was everyone’s inner monologue when talking to me. So, in order to take control back of that narrative, I decided to write the song from their perspective in almost a mocking way after realising how silly it is to judge someone for who they are. It’s really liberating to finally come to the realisation that if someone can’t handle who you are and everything you have to bring, then they simply don’t deserve to. Writing this song has helped me to remember that it’s fun to be embarrassing and there’s power in not limiting yourself to make others feel more ‘comfortable’.
What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
Recently, I’ve been finding a lot of inspiration in what I am witnessing happening around me. Usually, I’d write from personal experience, but more recently, with everything happening in the world right now, and all that I’ve been seeing and hearing and thinking about, I just can’t sit with the stagnant emotions of it. I’ve been leaning more into world issues and politics and beliefs that I feel really strongly about, seeking catharsis through the writing process, and it definitely has shaped some more of my recent songs into this driven and angry sound shaped by frustration, which the whole band has been super into.
What’s the creative process like for you?
It’s always different. Which keeps it super fun. Sometimes, I’ll have a keyword or phrase that I’ll shape the rest of the song around, other times I’ll have a guitar part that I’ll keep improvising over until something sticks. We’ve started to write a bit more collaboratively recently which has been great, we’ll send each other short ideas and we’ll add onto them and try to write or finish songs together, and although it can sometimes make it harder when there are several people working on one song at a time, I think it’s great to try everyone’s ideas and see what works best and hear ideas you never would’ve thought of.
If you could change something about the Australian music industry, what would it be?
I don’t know if it’s necessarily limited to the Australian music industry, but being a musician is so financially draining and complicated. Making money from streams is incredibly rare, and touring is practically impossible if you’re not super lucky, and it’s so difficult to get anything done unless it’s all DIY – take recording, getting merch made, artwork, posters, or press photos for example. I don't know how, but if there was a way to pay our musicians sufficiently enough for them to be able to actually support themselves, and to be able to share and hone their craft at a professional level, that would be incredible and such a huge weight lifted off our shoulders.
What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
I think life would be horrible. Music is such an integral part of mine and all of the band’s lives that even just the thought of not having that there just feels hollow. I truly don’t know how else I would express myself if I didn’t have music as an outlet. It’s always the first thing that I turn to.
What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
I cannot even begin to express how important it is to be authentic to yourself and what you love. There’s no point being a carbon copy of someone else when there is so much power in authenticity and originality. It is inevitable to be inspired by others, especially when it comes to your sound and image, but that’s all it should be. People love to see someone being unapologetically themselves, and it really shows when you love what you’re doing.
My advice is to play so many shows, write so many songs, go out and meet so many people. You just have to do it and keep doing it, and if it’s what you love and you really put the work in, then it will pay off.
Any upcoming shows?
