A Quick Chat with In Constance

Congrats on your new single 'Harmony'! Could you tell us a bit about it?

Harmony is probably everyone’s favourite from the EP. I wrote the instrumental at a pivotal point in my life, trying to turn my anger and loss of direction into something more productive, trying to work with my circumstances rather than fight them - to harmonise. The result is a pretty dynamic track with soft, melodic passages and rhythmic climaxes, showcasing the range of what the band has to offer.

What was the writing and production process like? Who was involved in the creation of 'Harmony'?

The writing process was fairly straightforward. I think I smashed it out in the space of a day or two and wrote what came naturally. I think that’s why there’s no real chorus section - I was a bit anti-traditional-song-structure back then. When the record entered production the drummer and the lead guitarist at the time gave their input and the song evolved for the better. The group self-produced and recorded the track from there until we did vocal production post-covid. That same vocal engineer also mixed the track, and then an old mentor of mine, Luke Palmer (Dead Letter Circus, Boo Seeka), who got me into music production, mastered the record.

Where or who do you draw influence from when you write?

I made a conscious effort when writing these tracks to not take a strong influence from anyone or try to fit into a certain genre or trend. In saying that, I was listening to a lot of post-rock at the time like Explosions In The Sky and lots of alternative rock like Balance and Composure and early Citizen. I think that really influenced the early writing of the record.

Where can listeners catch you live?

We’re cooking up a few Queensland shows right now, including some regional dates, but nothing we can reveal just yet!

How would you describe your live show?

I would say it’s a bit of everything! We have some slower dreamy soundscape moments and some more upbeat sad-rock moments. There’s intention in the order and the flow of the set, and we really try to take the audience on a journey with us.

Who is on In Constance's bucket list of artists or bands to tour with?

Aside from our big influences like Balance and Gates, I’d do anything for Manchester Orchestra or Death Cab for Cutie to take us on a run. Just iconic bands with immaculate live shows, not afraid to make the audience wait for huge moments. I’d also love to convince a Brisbane act We Set Sail to reunite for a few shows across the country! They were probably the band who got me invested in local music way back when.

What does this year look like for In Constance?

We’ve just announced our debut record ‘Live Everything’ which comes out March 20th! We’ve got plenty in the pipeline with playing as many places as possible and promoting that record all year with some special projects.
