A Quick Chat with Ella Fence

Ella Fence returns with Couple Kids, a slow-burning indie rock track awash in reverb-soaked guitars and soaring harmonies. The song captures the urge to run, not out of heartbreak, but from the bittersweet awareness that love and loss often coexist. With over five million streams and multiple Gold Coast Music Awards to her name, Ella continues to evolve and hit new milestones. Couple Kids lands ahead of her December national tour supporting Sofia Isella, so we caught up with her to talk about the single, its meaning, and what’s next.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?
I started writing this song when I was much younger actually, living in a sharehouse that had such a beautiful sense of home in it. I remember thinking, β€œWow, this is really special, I wish I could just live here forever and life could stay just like this.”
But at the exact same time, I was pretty romantically lonely and in and out of a bit of a chaotic situationship (#dopaminehack), so even though some things were in essence idealistic & β€œperfect”, maybe I was holding myself back from growing away from those bad habits in order to crystalise that moment in time, and stay β€œforever young”.
Or maybe it’s just about a balcony & some trees, I dunno hahaha SUE ME.

Who are some of your influences, and why?
I could listen to Delicious Things by Wolf Alice on repeat for the next month and be pretty happy hey.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?
Writing for me usually begins with a line or two about whatever I have swirling around in my head that I’m trying to process – I’ll usually throw that in my phone notes and voice memos immediately. From there it can move to guitar, keyboard, notepad, A3 paper etc. to kind of let the themes β€œburst” and so I’m looking at it through lots of different lenses & angles.
It’s not until I have at least a verse, chorus & bridge that I’ll bring ideas to other people usually otherwise things can get way too confusing for me (unless it’s a straight up co-write from the get go).

What do you think makes a great song?
I am lyrics obsesssssed, my favourite songs are the ones that have a line that hits me right in the feels. I know the music itself is important and my favourite thing ever is to rehearse and play live with my four bandmates, but as predominately a vocalist & lyricist (then guitarist only after those things) that’s where my attention is drawn to primarily.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Florence & the Machine or Phoebe Bridgers 100%! From what I’ve gathered from interviews and things they have a similar creative process to me, it would be like a crash course in how to finesse my songwriting I feel. Maybe one day it will happen, a girl can dream!!
I’m also going on tour with Sofia Isella in December and we’ve written music together before, it would be great to write some more with her if we get the opportunity!

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?
I was training a Guide Dog earlier this year as a puppy raiser, which is creative in its own way – learning about animals & responding in the moment.
I also love painting but I’m not amaaaazing at it, I just love the feeling of a huge canvas, large brushes and lots of thick paint to go a bit crazy with. A huge dream would be to own a house or apartment that has one room in it that when creativity strikes I can just paint the walls, but not in like a chill polished way, in like a messy chaotic (unhinged) way haha.

Who are some local bands we should check out?
Pia Pressure, Ayla, Laurel Hill, Katie Milae, Jollee, Lukae, Zola Sky, Lavelin, Eimhin, Eleea, Sunny Luwe, Matt Collins, Izzy Day, Danii, Christian Patey, Amira, Madi Breen, Amela (omg panic attack I have so forgotten someone).

Winter or summer and why?
Oooooo no surprise I am on the FENCE here hehe I lalalalove swimming in the ocean in Summer but mulled wine & snuggles – yes please! Winter on the Gold Coast doesn’t really exist though haha but if I had to choose probably Summer because there’s more fun things to do and people want to be out and about.

What do you have planned to close out 2025?
A National tour with Sofia Isella in December 2025! Brisbane (The Triffid), Melbourne (Palais Theatre) and Sydney (Roundhouse)! There’s only a few tickets left for the whole tour as well, which is super exciting! Then she’s off on a North America tour supporting Florence & the Machine – go girl, wow!
