A Quick Chat with Purée

For those who don’t know Purée, how would you describe your sound?
We always find it really hard to describe our sound. We often hear it range from Spacey Jane down to The Cure. The bottom line is we love to make music that simply feeds our passion for making sounds. Often that's from one another, which is a difficult thing to explain.

How did Purée get started making music together?
We started making music together pretty well just as covid got serious. There's a long-winded version of how we came to be, but nowadays we kinda just like to say that the stars aligned, we gained best friends for life, and a really really dope band.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest track “Someone You’d Like”?
This song really inspired itself to be honest. It was the first time we had ever written a song entirely off a snippet of a demo. It was the four of us in a room, throwing words and lines at each other until something stuck. Pretty much every line is written by a different member which feels really special to us. The song has no main meaning, but flashes of our personalities within it. This concept is exciting as listeners get to decide what it means to them as an individual rather than being told by us what it's about.

You performed as a showcase artist at BIGSOUND 2025 in September, what was that experience like?
Performing at BIGSOUND has been a goal of ours ever since we found out about the event. To be surrounded by so many amazing artists and industry folk for a whole week was honestly life-changing. We had the best time ever playing some dope shows, and meeting some really cool people.

You were recently nominated for Best Group and Best New Artist at the South Australian Music Awards, how did it feel to get that recognition?
It was a really cool feeling to be nominated for not one, but two awards. We love the Adelaide scene and all the bands and artists within it. So being recognised as worthy of those awards felt really special.

As an Adelaide-based band, who’s an Adelaide artist you’d love to give a shout-out to?
There are so many incredible acts in Adelaide but if we had to narrow down some of our favourites we'd probably say Townhouse, Swapmeet, The Fuss and The Tullamarines of course.

What can you tell us about your upcoming EP ‘What Happens Now’?
This EP is such a significant turning point for us as a band. We really put a lot of effort into the writing and making it feel like a body of work rather than a collection of songs. We experienced a lot of firsts through the process of recording too, such as finishing songs as we recorded them, changing words at the last minute and spending multiple days at a time in the studio. We feel like it's probably our most honest work in terms of writing. Songs like “Better” touch on grief and healing, while others such as “A4” focus on relationships and how intricate or difficult they can become. We are so excited to take all of these new songs and the classics on the road early next year for our What Happens Now? tour.
