A QUICK CHAT WITH KATE GILL

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

For the most part, particularly when making this EP, the creative process for me stays the same. I do most of my writing in my bedroom with my guitar, and then take it to the studio where I workshop it with my producer. Sometimes this involves changing heaps of lyrics and developing new melodic ideas, and other times we just record it as I wrote it and build it from there.

Who are your main influences and how do you feel they’ve shaped your music?

I’m honestly inspired by so many artists, and I think there’s elements of lots of them in my own musical style. To name a few, I really admire Gracie Abrams, Julia Michaels, Olivia Rodrigo and Lizzy McAlpine - particularly their approach to songwriting and how raw and honest their lyrics are. Their music was definitely a huge inspiration when I was writing this EP.

Which is your favourite song on the EP and what’s the story behind its creation?

That’s a tough one because it’s always changing! But currently I’d say my favourite is ‘the end’. It was the last song I wrote for the EP, and definitely took the longest amount of time to get right, but I’ve really fallen in love with it. I think because the story is so raw and honest, I was extra-picky when it came to production. I probably did my producers head in with the amount of versions we created but I’m so happy with the end result.

Tell us a bit about how you got your start in music?

I’ve always loved to sing but found it pretty hard to put myself out there - especially when it came to sharing my own songs. During a lockdown in 2020 I downloaded TikTok and got really into posting covers, and with some positive feedback from strangers I grew the courage to finally share one of my own songs I’d written. I was lucky enough to have the video go a little bit viral, and received an outpouring of kindness in the comments of the video. The whole experience really boosted my confidence and encouraged me to continue sharing my original music! Since then I’ve been writing and releasing pretty consistently.

What is your favourite memory of writing this EP?

The whole process was honestly incredible. This is the first larger project I’ve worked on, and it was super fulfilling to create it with just myself and my producer. I think our styles mesh really well, but we also challenge each other and push one another out of our comfort zones. It was just a really great experience and I can’t wait to keep creating more music.
