REVIEW: Five – Rod Laver Arena – Melbourne
Written by: Lachlan Bradford
There was a moment during Five’s set at Rod Laver Arena where it felt less like a reunion tour and more like 12,000 people collectively time travelling back to 1999.
I’d never been to a show with seats on the floor before and honestly wasn’t sure how it’d work for a pop show built on nostalgia and movement. Turns out it was perfect. Everyone had enough room to dance, scream, film shaky close-up videos of their favourite member and fully lose themselves without getting crushed shoulder-to-shoulder. Rod Laver felt more like the world’s biggest hens party than a traditional arena gig.
Before the boy band even walked out, the crowd had already started a full Mexican wave around the arena like everyone knew they were about to tap into a very specific kind of serotonin.
Opening with “Slam Dunk (Da Funk)” immediately sent the place airborne. Every lyric screamed back word for word. Not politely sung. Screamed. The kind of screaming that only happens when a band soundtracks people’s school discos, first crushes and teenage bedrooms.
“Got The Feelin’” pushed the crowd into absolute fever pitch, while “If Ya Gettin’ Down” transported the arena straight back to the TRL era. It’s easy for nostalgia acts to feel overly polished or disconnected, but Five genuinely looked grateful to still be on stage together after such a long break. All five members looked sharp, sounded tight and constantly acknowledged the crowd throughout the night.
Closing with “Everybody Get Up” sent Melbourne into a full frenzy. Drinks flying, people dancing on seats, phones in the air everywhere.
Then came the encore.
The run of covers was genuinely great, but “Keep On Movin’” was the reminder of why Five mattered in the first place. Massive hooks. Massive energy. Proper pop music built for crowds exactly like this one.
