REVIEW: Deftones – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
Written by: Lachlan Bradford
Melbourne became a cathedral of distortion the moment Deftones took the stage.
Rod Laver was packed, and it felt tense.
Ecca Vandal opened with a sharp hometown set. Interpol followed, locking the room into a hypnotic rhythm before closing with “PDA” and one of the greatest outros ever written.
Five minutes before Deftones hit the stage, smoke cannons flooded the room until you could barely see.
Then “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” kicked in, and the place exploded.
Bodies bouncing instantly. Every lyric screamed back at Chino Moreno like it had been sitting there for years waiting to come out.
What elevated the show beyond pure heaviness was the production. The visuals turned the chaos into something almost dreamlike, adding a different dimension to the sound.
The guitars felt enormous. Proper chest-rattling stuff.
“my mind is a mountain” and “infinite source” absolutely slapped live, while “Around the Fur” and “Diamond Eyes” had the whole arena screaming word for word.
There wasn’t any mucking around between songs either. Just ripping from one track straight into the next.
The crowd said everything. Longtime fans who grew up on this standing next to kids discovering it in real time, all losing their minds the same way.
Most bands become nostalgia acts. Deftones feel like they’re still climbing.
