CROOKED COLOURS | ‘VERA’ ALBUM REVIEW

“The most fun you can have without getting high.” 4/5

Good things take time, so it’s no wonder this record took so goddamn long to snake its way into our ears. Tucking themselves away for a little over 18 months, Crooked Colours are finally ready to unleash their first full-length offering, Vera. And as I alluded to an earlier review, it really is a total game changer, and 100% worth the wait.

In true Crooked Colours style, this album is sonically perfect. Every single element has been meticulously arranged, yet feels entirely effortless at the same time. It’s the kind of release that deserves to be listened to in sequence, exactly as they intended it to unfold. Between Ivan Ooze’s feature on I Hope You Get It, to the solely instrumental centerpiece, Vera, and everything in between, the album never once jars.

The always intoxicating drawl of Slabber's vocals delivers a long distance love letter across the majority of the album, especially in Come Back To You and Running Blind; a reassuring reminder each time they take to the stage.

Where Slabber's lyrics were previously veiled by electronic elements, Perfect Run strips everything back to reveal their true vulnerability, and add yet another dimension to the band’s repertoire; something special to close the record.

Although an obvious influence, it's almost an insult likening Vera’s sound to that of Glass Animals; it ignores the fact that Crooked Colours have curated their own unmistakable sound since we first met them in 2013. With a level of sophistication surpassing that of others in the genre, it’s time for Crooked Colours to step out of the darkness they so deftly manipulate, and assume their rightful place in the spotlight. A perfect debut.
