A Quick Chat with The Coronas
First up, can you please give us a quick intro, 2-3 sentences.
We are an Indie 3-piece from Dublin, Ireland and we’ve been together for a while now! 8 albums, numerous spins around the globe singing our hearts out, we have the best job in the world.
Can you tell us a bit about how you’re feeling about your upcoming Australian tour?
We are buzzing! Our last tour in Australia was incredible, the biggest audiences we had ever played over there and we hope this tour will be even better.
What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
The National, Gang of Youths, Haim, Vampire Weekend. There’s loads, and plenty of different influences within the band too. I think we’re influenced by everything we see and take in in the world but I especially love Matt from the National’s way with words and turn of phrase.
What’s the creative process like for you?
I’m currently locked away in a quiet corner of Ireland - Dingle, Co Kerry - writing for our next record. We work best when we give ourselves space to breathe and write away from the world and all distractions.
If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?
Make it closer to Ireland somehow! We have noticed a big difference in the weekend vs weekday shows. It feels like the Aussies live for the weekend a bit more than back home.
What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
Very different, I’d like to think I would have found something creative to do with myself. Music is so important for our mental wellbeing, not sure where we’d be without it.
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
We’ve collaborated with an amazing singer songwriter called Gabrielle Aplin a couple of times and she’s so talented we’d love to work with her again. Such a great writer and an incredible voice, she’s lovely too.
What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
Write your own music, music that speaks to you, try not to follow what others are doing. Be authentic. Gig as much as you can and get a manager you trust, even if it’s just a friend of yours, but not someone in your family!
Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
We supported Paul McCartney in Dublin which was incredible to see him perform with his band. We got to meet him too which was amazing. He was lovely!
Where are you most excited to visit while you're in Australia?
I love St Kilda, so many Irish there I feel like I can just walk down the street and bump into someone I know from home!
