A Quick Chat with navy june

Boorloo five piece, navy june, blend grunge grit with soulful warmth, and they are kicking 2026 off with mister, a dark and seductive indie rock statement. Built on confrontation and self assurance, mister explores the moment honesty replaces patience, leaning into heartbreak without losing its edge or allure. After building momentum on Perth stages supporting the likes of Old Mervs, Great Gable, Fool Nelson and more, this release sees navy june sharpen their sound and confidence. We caught up with the band to talk about the single, its meaning, and what’s next.

Can you tell us what this track means to the band and what you want people to take away from it?

This song is Cathartic for us. It expresses our honesty and anger in response to someone being cruel and self-driven. We hope it can be really liberating for listeners and let them know they don’t have to accept this behaviour.

Who are some of the band’s influences, and why?

Fiona Apple, Fleetwood Mac, Hole and Portishead.

What's the creative process for the band, from writing through to recording?

Ruby comes in with a tune she had wrote on the acoustic or keyboard and we all play around with it at rehearsal and put our influences and our own style on it and the tune develops from there.

What do you think makes a great song?

When you can really tell the band and artist have a lot of feeling and emotion in their music and it's truly authentic.

If navy june could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
