A Quick Chat with nabii

‘in my room!’ is out now. Can you take us through the concept behind the track?
I wanted to write a self assured pop song. Something that immediately lifts your mood and injects a bit of joy into your life. I love finding music you want to have on repeat because of the way it makes you feel.

The track blends hyperpop with club influences and emotive songwriting. How do you approach merging these elements in your sound? And what's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?
My best music is made in one session, on my own, in my room. I love pop music for its vulnerability. I love that I can capture and share such personal feelings and intimate moments that I have in my room while making music. I love electronic music because it feels like the possibilities are limitless. I love making the sound effects sync with the lyrical meaning, and having all the elements in the song interact and sing together. My creative process is something that usually pours out of me, something I can make sense of after the fact.

There’s a strong sense of nostalgia and childlike wonder in ‘in my room!’. Why was it important for you to explore those themes?
I want to be able to make uplifting music with a message of hope, especially right now considering the state of the world. I approach music and life in general with a sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness. It’s how I stay learning and growing and it's how I stay enjoying life, even when it gets hard. It’s about remembering that we’re all the same, everyone is literally the same. We’ve all been a little kid before y'know? So it’s a reminder to stay empathetic and connected to yourself and connect with each other, remembering the humanity of it all :)

You’ve played iconic venues and festivals across Australia, and recently supported Memphis LK on tour. How have those experiences influenced your sound and artistic direction?
I definitely think about how the music I make will translate in a live setting, and frequently playing shows has given me an understanding of what the general audience responds to and how I can create a memorable live experience that people would appreciate and remember. Seeing artists live is always so inspiring for their stage presence, set design and the whole experience of a show. Like Memphis LK’s set design was so beautiful and her ability to engage with her audience was a cool thing to witness.

You’re also the founder of AngelFM, supporting BI-POC fems and underrepresented voices. How did this all start? And what are your plans for the future?
It started because I felt like there wasn’t really a space championing fem and underrepresented artists in the local scene, especially because I was surrounded by such incredible fem talent, it felt like a no brainer to spotlight them. When I first entered the scene I felt I couldn’t really find a space where I fit in or saw myself or my peers represented. I’d love to keep throwing events to spotlight all of the amazing emerging local creatives. And hopefully we can run some fem and GNC workshops this year!

You were named a winner of The Blueprint Project in 2025. What did that recognition mean to you at this stage in your career?
It came at the perfect time, when I had a clearer vision of my project after honing in on my sound and creative practice. It was a time where I was actually really ready to learn more and run with the momentum. I’ve been connected with so many amazing people and opportunities so it’s been really impactful. I’ve learnt so much from Amanda Blue and everyone along the way so I’m very grateful.

What do you hope listeners take away from ‘in my room!’?
I hope they can dance down the street, blasting music, singing along in their car, dancing in their room, expressing themselves more freely in their life. I hope they feel like adding the whimsy back into their life, doing things that make them truly happy, maybe picking up a childhood hobby they’ve abandoned since.

What do you have planned for 2026?
So much! I’ll release my next EP. We’re going to materialise a lot of creative ideas and concepts into a physical experience. I don’t want to say too much… but lots of travel as well!
