A Quick Chat With My Cherie
What was the inspiration behind your new single ‘Don’t Compare Yourself’?
This track was inspired by my personal experience of struggling to find contentment amid the societal pressures and expecations of what my life should like like by the age of 27. With an array of opportunities and options in western society, especially compared to previous generations, it can be so easy to compare your journey or timeline to others. I know there are so many out there that feel this way and I wanted this track to connect us all and remind us to trust our own paths and feel less alone in it.
For people who haven’t heard your music before, how would you describe it?
I would describe it as ethereal pop. Bllie Eilish meet Kate Bush but also Kurt Cobain comes out at my live shows.
When writing music, how do you start the process of creation?
The process is quite different for me every time. I like to change it up to keep my brain stimulated and creativity at its highest. One of my favourite processes and what happened with this song was going into the studio as a fresh canvas. The lyrics, melodies and foundation of production came together really quickly and naturally. We sat patiently with the track and watched it develop over the course of 2 years. Once the song was completely finished and even mastered, we decided to redo the vocals and a lot of unexpected fresh ideas came out of it.
It can be so hard to know when a song or painting is finished and I usually try to just trust and finish it and not over think it for too long but I’m so grateful that Mario challenged my creative process and knew the song could level up. Sometimes it worth not getting too attached to a demo.
What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
I definitely have an array of influences. I’ve recently been listening to a lot of Adriene Lenker, Julia Jacklin and more lyrical focussed artists. I also get very inspired by the creatives in my local music scene.
I chase a feeling and find inspiration from instrumental electronic to singer-songwriter and I fall in love with specific attributes of artists such as: the soulfulness of James Blake, the innovation shown in Grimes, the intimatacy of Billie Eilish’s vocals, the purposefulness of Florence and the Machine, the freeness of Aurora.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
This question made me picture all the artists that I love in their creative processes and it was a beautiful time in my imagination so thank you for a great question. I feel like artists like Adriene Lenker would have such a spiritual and personal presence when writing that it would almost feel intrusive to be there but man would I love to see Adriene when the angels whisper melodies to them. Also would love to be a vocal feature in a Flume track because they are just such a innovative and unique producer that whatever they end up doing with those vocals would be LIT.
What does 2024 look like for My Cherie?
I have some more music planned to be released very soon! I’m also currently working on my (not actually yet announced, shh top secret) debut album. I’ve recently changed my live show set up and the band and I are so excited to get on the road, play more shows and festivals! I’m just so ready to share more of the thing I love most in this world, performing.
