A QUICK CHAT WITH LE SHIV
Can you tell us what this EP means to you and what you want people to take away from it?
This is our first body of work we’ve put out since we started in 2018. So for us it’s nice to finally be able to have a body of work and not just be focusing on a single at a time. The songs span from when we first started the band to current new songs. So it’s kind of a small timeline of Le Shiv so far.
Who are some of your influences and why?
We’ve always as a collective loved and been inspired by bands like the strokes, Beatles flaming lips. There’s honestly because of the timeline of this ep so many bands that have influenced each song.
What's the creative process for the band, from writing through to recording?
Usually one of us will come in with an initial idea and then all get together and work it the production and feelings of a song together. At the moment every one is living apart so there’s a bit of writing from a distance where we will be sending ideas back and forth. I usually will just play and play and play until a set of chords and lyrics kinda stick and feel good together.
What do you think makes a great song?
I think my favourite things in songs are usually melody and tones. I kinda listen to the melody first in a song and once I’m caught on it I will hear the lyrics later.
If the band could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I’d love to work with a filmmaker like Alejandro Jodorowsky and just make music to something visually fully out there and be able to try to meet the same sort of bizarre and crazy absurdness.
When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do each have?
Jarleth creatively finds ways to make sure a possum can’t get in a roof.
Who are some local bands we should check out?
Australian bands that I like are Uplifting Bell Ends, Belair Lip Bombs, Surely Shirley, Dust, Crocodylus, Stimpies, Hobsons Bay Coast Guard. I'm sure there’s a lot more I’m not mentioning.
Winter or summer and why?
Summer if it’s not too hot. But when it’s too hot then I pick winter.
What else does 2024 have in store for the band?
We will be touring our new EP in March. Touring with other bands later in the year. Then we will probably be doing more of our own tours. And we will be recording more and more. Maybe another ep? Maybe our first album? Maybe just a new song here and there.
