A Quick Chat with Lasca Dry

CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR SINGLE ‘THE OCEAN’

My inspiration for The Ocean first appeared one evening while having a jam session, during which the chorus melody and the lyric ‘I’m like the Ocean’ came out and it went straight into demo-ing. The melody had such a beautiful flow to it, I started thinking about how I wanted to talk about the female form and expressing that through different elements in nature, I already had ‘I’m like the Ocean’ so I went with that as the main inspiration for the song.

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES AND HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOUR SONGWRITING?

I am very influences by late 60’s and 70’s music especially Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Jefferson Airplane and David Bowie, these bands mostly subconsciously affect me by their chord progressions and sound effects.

WHAT’S THE CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU?

Most of the time I will pick up a guitar start coming up with a chord progression or lick, then start singing a melody over the top. This first phase is normally when all the juicy catchy elements come out, then it’s about refining and clarifying the theme, form and lyrics.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE SOMETHING ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Difficult question, I feel like there are many things I don’t know about the industry, but so far with the experience I have, I wish that there was some where you could go or someone you could talk to that could give you a clear run down of all the little steps to releasing music someone that could help guide your musical career, so I suppose I wouldn’t really change anything but add a place where you could be mentored and have access to information on how to move forward.

WHAT DO YOU THINK LIFE WOULD BE LIKE FOR YOU IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE MUSIC AS AN OUTLET?

I would have to find some other way to express myself, and I do have other ways already such as acting, sewing, sometime drawing and even great conversations but really there is nothing like music and nothing could replace it.

IS THERE ANYONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH?  WHY?

I would absolutely love to collaborate with Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, the biggest reason that I became a musician was because of Page and his solos, you know how everyone has a song or a person that they admire most well mine’s Jimmy Page and that solo from Stairway to Heaven!!!!

WHO’S THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU’VE WORKED WITH/MET?

Very difficult question! I feel like the most interesting people I know are the people I’m closest to!

But in another way, I feel that the most interesting people we can ever meet are ourselves. I am forever learning about how I tick, what drives me forward, why I make the choices that I do and learning how I work creatively/musically: all this is very fascinating to me.

FAVOURITE HANGOVER CURE?

Well, I would normally say ‘not drinking’ but I happened to have a hangover on the weekend, (this is very unusual for me)! And honestly the only thing that cured it was the hair of the dog! (Not normal behaviour!)

ANY UPCOMING SHOWS?

Yes in September I’m playing at Tasmania’s Junction Arts festival and more to come but no announced yet!
