A Quick Chat with LamBros.
Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘You Won't Call’?
We’ve both had our own experiences being let down by someone we care about. Feeling like the relationship is one-sided, and that we were giving more than we were getting. These kinds of emotions often simmer and bubble under the surface for a while before they can’t be held in anymore. “You Won’t Call” is written in that moment where it all spills out, when you release your pent up emotion and ask why you’re being treated this way. It’s a release of anger, pent-up emotion and honesty. In many ways it felt very cathartic for us writing this song, and capturing these feelings through music.
What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
Our influences are incredibly wide-ranging and continually changing. We are passionate musicians, and love listening to just about anything and really absorbing music from different genres and cultures.
With “You Won’t Call” we drew from some of our favourite blues/soul artists. James Brown, Chris Stapleton, Teddy Swims, Teskey Brothers, Allen Stone, and more.
What’s the creative process like for you?
Constantly changing but always the same. The order of things often changes. Whether it’s guitar first, or drums, or vocals, but there’s one part that never changes. We always make sure our songs sound great acoustically before we start producing and recording. If the song can’t stand up on its own two feet with nothing but the barest of instrumentation and production, then we don’t see it as ready. This particular song was written by Connor late at night, and mostly in one sitting.
If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?
More celebration and opportunities for indie artists that are doing things differently. Australia is a country of such diversity, but that diversity and difference is not often celebrated or pedestalled on the biggest stages. Whether it’s on commercial radio, festival lineups, or local venue bookings, we think showcasing diverse music will encourage more artists to be authentic and true to themselves, and therefore allow diverse Australian audiences to connect strongly with homegrown music.
What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
Pretty boring! We are both electricians by trade, and would probably be doing a lot more pulling wires, installing lights, and working on electrical projects!
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
There are so many artists we’d love to work alongside one day. Chris Stapleton, Larkin Poe, Matt Corby, Anderson .Paak, Tom Misch, Marcus King, Allen Stone. The list never ends!
What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
We’ve learnt that there is definitely not one set path to move forward. Everyone is different, and no one knows what they’re doing and what’s coming next! So embrace opportunities when they come around, be great at your craft, and enjoy the memories you are making along the way.
Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
There are so many! We had a great time supporting Tones and I, she’s an absolute legend of a human being and incredibly talented. We also had a really special show with Rebecca and Megan from Larkin Poe, another sibling duo from the states who are making waves across the globe in the blues scene.
We’d say the most interesting people we’ve met though are definitely the audience members and fans we’ve connected with at our own shows and tours. So many interesting characters from all walks of life. We love meeting people and talking to them about their stories and how they connect with our music. We have the most incredibly diverse fan-base, and we are so lucky to have so many music-loving legends enjoy our music over the years!
Any plans for a tour on the cards?
You bet! We’ve got a 5-stop NSW tour kicking off this Saturday February 28th in the Northern Beaches of Sydney! There might be more shows added soon too! We’ve got some great venues lined up so we are really keen to get out and perform the new stuff live!
