A Quick Chat with Hugh Bagley

Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Lay Low’?
I wrote it about working and living for the weekend just being stuck in your job and chasing a fantasy of what people think modern life is for the weekend.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
I love INXS, Post Malone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weeknd, Drake, Kanye West and Tame Impala have all influenced me massively at different times in my life.

What’s the creative process like for you?
I like to work with different people so it's always refreshing and pushes me outside my comfort zone because everyone you work with is different and have different experiences and skillsets.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?
I think Australian’s love to support each other and see Aussie artists do well just look at the hottest 100. I’d love to see more international Australian artists collaborate. Some of my favourite Flume and Chet Faker music is when they worked together on their Lockjaw project and we don’t get to see it enough even the Jimmy Barnes and INXS song was sick. Imagine if Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) did a project with Keli Holiday or Dom Dolla with Fisher. What would it sound like? And it would only make the Australian music industry bigger.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
Boring, I think if I didn’t have something that is hard to work towards I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?
I want to work with Fisher, he’s the king of Australian Music and been a massive fan of his shows and festivals forever. Also Inoxia she’s a huge busker from the Gold Coast I did a show with her a while back I’ve got a few ideas we could work on if she’s interested.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
I’ve still got miles to go but be patient and don’t quit. You could be so close to a breakthrough but if you quit you’ll never know. You only have to be right one time.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
The most interesting I’ve worked with was recently and that was Blake Malone been a fan of his production for a long time and a lot of the artists he’s worked with and Konstantin Kersting, Ben Nott, Ian Thistle Thorburn and Luke Mariconte have all been crazy talented in different ways.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?
Absolutely I will continue to release new music and play as many shows as I can book.
