A Quick Chat with Geordie Kieffer
The sultry provocateur of "Agro-Pop", Geordie Kieffer, has announced his first ever headline tour of Australia, set to bring his wild live show Down Under this October.
Kicking off on Thursday 8 October at Max Watts in Melbourne the run continues to Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney on Friday 9 October before wrapping up on Saturday 10 October at Brisbane's Brightside Outdoors.
An impish trailblazer, Geordie crafts hardcore pop bangers that bark and bite, drawing influence from both his questionable past and the city-wide playground of his Los Angeles hometown. His sound is something novel: a sexy and gritty escapade through Pop, Hip-Hop and Electro that dives head first into your brain and just wonβt get out. We sat down with the man himself to get to know him a little better ahead of his first time here in Australia.
Your sound has been described as βAgro-Popβ with pop hooks, electro and general mayhem. How would you define the term yourself, and did you always intend for the project to feel a bit wild?
Thatβs my own self described term I made up. I always intend for my music to represent something honest, even if itβs hidden away somewhere. Iβve certainly been and will continue to be wild.
Do you see your music as character-driven at all?
Not particularly. I think all of us have many modes. All those characters are just as much a part of me as the version answering these questions.
Your music suits a variety of different settings. Do you approach songwriting visually, imagining where itβll be listened to?
My process is quite simple. Lyrics and melody are always and only written secondarily to the music.
The beat and instrumentation inform where the song wants to go. Thereβs nothing visual at all. Itβs purely sonic and you just let it guide you.
Where do you think is the best place or environment to enjoy a Geordie Kieffer playlist, and why?
To be honest, I wouldnβt know. I almost never listen to my own music unless Iβm working on it.
Your live reputation precedes you. Whatβs the wildest thing thatβs happened at a Geordie Kieffer show?
I dodged a dildo going 50 mph once.
Youβre heading to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane for your first Australian headline run this October. How excited are you to be here for the first time?
Thereβs nothing like doing something for the first time. Iβve always loved and admired Australia. I canβt wait to spend some real time there and plant myself for a few days. See the people.
Is there anything youβre hoping to see or do while over here?
I just want to be on a beach and with the people.
Have you ever heard of a shoey? And would you do one?
No, but hell yes.
For those unfamiliar with your catalogue, what song would you suggest beginning the GK journey with?
Personally, songs like Swinger and Redline are good examples of your standard Geordie song. Car Song is a sleeper that drives a little harder ;)
If Geordie Kieffer could soundtrack any movie, what would it be and why?
Oh maybe in another life. Visuals would tie me down too much. The songs gotta have room to go where they want. Itβs all about the songs.
