A Quick Chat with Fur Blossom

Fur Blossom return with Goldsmith, a slow burning psychedelic rock statement out now that channels the spirit of the 60s and 70s through a modern lens. The Melbourne four piece build the track on undulating guitar riffs, hypnotic grooves, and Craig Tees’ crisp yet contemplative vocals, exploring the timeless tension of reshaping yourself for someone else. Following their kaleidoscopic debut EP The She Said Sun EP, the band continue their ascent with a run of shows including their single launch at Nighthawks in Melbourne on February 27, Mordialloc Festival on March 1, Good Gumnuts Festival in Burnie on March 7 and 8, plus headline dates at The Loft in Sydney on March 13 and Dicey Riley’s Hotel in Wollongong on March 14. We caught up with Fur Blossom to talk about the new single, the evolution of their sound, and what’s next.

Can you tell us what this track means to the band and what you want people to take away from it?

Goldsmith has a lot of different parts of us in it. We wrote it a few years ago and we are finally getting to release it now.

Goldsmith for us is a bit of a culmination of sounds we’ve been working on and developing over the time we’ve been playing together. As Mat pointed out it’s a really good indication of the direction we are heading.

It’s got a bit of everything, it’s got the 12 string, some rocky parts to it and the harmonica.

Who are some of Fur Blossom's influences, and why?

Craig: The Byrds, The La’s, early Pink Floyd

Mat: Joy Division, The Clash

In the beginning we were very influenced by the 60’s, Craig was really into The Beatles and I was really into Cream? I think those worlds collided - he brought the psych and I brought the rock

What's the band's creative process, from writing through to recording?

Sometimes a song just falls out of us in one rehearsal session. Which is the best thing - the songs that we start whether it be in the morning, evening or the night and you finish on that same day those are the special ones. Some songs will take us not even 20 minutes to finish and some songs we will be jamming on for a couple of months.

Recording is a whole other thing, we wrote Goldsmith in 2024. Depends how much free time we have - 2024 was quite a busy year for us and 2025 we took on some pretty big projects so a lot of songs your hearing now have probably been in the band for a while.

What do you think makes a great song?

When we are on it. Nah but it in all seriousness if you can connect to it and it evokes emotion, what more can you ask. I could listen to a song and think it’s amazing whilst someone else could listen to the same song and think it’s trash or vice versa.

If Fur Blossom could collaborate with any band, who would it be and why?

Ocean Alley or Hockey Dad could do something surfy rock - I reckon we could tear that up. Maybe not necessarily as a collab but as a learning experience we would love to pick the brains of the guys from Babe Rainbow and find out how they come up with the stuff they come up with. Would also love to collaborate with Jared Wright the creator of the big lez show in some way, his psychedelic ideas are great. Jared if you need a band we will fly up there and record just let us know.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

Craig: I do some pottering in the garden
Mat: I like to do some poetry and drawing, play cricket and footy

Who are some local bands we should check out?

The Dahlias for one are great, we’ve played a couple of shows with them and they always bring the house down. Fauna and The Pearlies who are playing with us at Nighthawks on the 27th February for our single launch. We got to shout out our manager’s band Pepper La Floyd also our very own JoΓ©l and his solo project.

Winter or summer and why?

Summer overall the energy’s better and we also like the beach but Winter fashion is better.

What do you have planned after the release of β€˜Goldsmith'?

We can’t say too much but there will be more music written and more shows played. We are playing some shows in the not so distant future in New South Wales. Definitely more songs coming and more variation in music. We’ve got quite a range of tracks from the slower lovey dovey ones to the balls to the wall psychy ones. You heard it here first I bought some bagpipes the other day so.
