A Quick Chat with Forever at Midnight

How did the initial idea for Poison Dreams come together?

“Josh sent me a track he had made and as soon as I heard it I remember feeling instantly excited and I wrote the lyrics and melody that evening. When I heard the bridge section leading into the guitar solo I knew it needed to be quite emotionally charged, I drew inspiration from my own experiences of what I was going through at the time and the writing just flowed pretty naturally.” – Sidonie (lead singer)

How do you balance heavy riffs with catchy melodies in your songs?

We try not to overthink the process; that way we get a natural blend of the two core ideas. Our current writing style is fairly independent of each other and so far it’s been working out, but moving forward we will be exploring more synergistic ways of writing too.

What do you want listeners to feel when they hear this track?

We want people to feel something, full stop. Music is so powerful but also subjective; there’s a range of things you could feel while listening to Poison Dreams. We hope that those who relate to the lyrics find comfort and power, we hope you scream it in your car, play it at the gym, and rock out to it in your room. We just hope people connect to it and love it like we do.

How does Poison Dreams fit into the band’s overall musical journey?

Poison Dreams is the start of a new chapter for us as it’s the first release with our new lineup. Sonically it’s more involved as there are more members contributing to the songwriting process. In terms of genre and progression, it is a nice pastiche of our influences which will continue to evolve going forward.

Were there any surprising moments during recording or writing?

Josh, the guitarist, writes and produces a lot of the tracks including Poison Dreams and he is pretty structured. Sid is a lot more spontaneous, and so when tracking vocal ideas a lot of on-the-spot changes were made, creating a more flavourful track in the end.

How are you preparing to bring these songs to life on your upcoming tour across Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra, and Melbourne?

We’ve got a massive set planned for this tour. Our drummer Evan has worked really hard building relationships and organising these gigs. Now having both female and male vocalists really adds a unique twist to our existing catalogue and you only get that experience live. Josh (guitarist / producer / mix engineer) has been working tirelessly on our live rig as he is also our tech guy (he needs a raise). We’re super excited to be playing new unreleased music on this upcoming tour. It’s gonna be a pretty physically demanding run of shows; we’ve got a super high-energy set, but we’re training and rehearsing hard to deliver the best performances possible. We’re just really keen to get on stage and share our music with new crowds.
