A Quick Chat with Desperately Seeking Suki

You recently had 'Sour' played on BBC Radio 1. How did that feel?

Incredible!! We'd always listened to the show growing up together, so to now hear our own songs being played on there is so amazing. We were absolutely gobsmacked when we first found out, definitely a pinch-yourself moment!

What first sparked the idea for 'Nevermind'?

Ummm, well... I guess, in short... an unhealthy situationship.

You and Danny are based between Australia and the UK. What do you enjoy about making music together from different places?

We both love the aspect of sending a bounce or demo and then waking up to a response or different variation of it. It's really nice to be able to be so connected yet on the other side of the world from each other. It can be really tricky at times, we only have a limited amount of time to discuss things due to the time difference, and this is especially stressful around release times because we're doing everything ourselves. Having said that, to be able to collaborate in this way is really refreshing, and it means we get to play shows and tour both countries together, which we're really excited about (fortunately, we travel well together).

Your sound mixes indie, synth-pop and guitars. What influences are coming through most at the moment?

We'd say at the moment, a lot of early 2000s Yeah Yeah Yeahs and their newer stuff too, especially their latest album. Danny's been listening to a lot of The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem, so perhaps all of those artists might be seeping in.

You have a strong background in film and visual storytelling. Does that influence how you approach your music?

Not consciously while I write, but when I do write, I often have visuals with lots of colours. I hear music in colour too, so perhaps that influences the visual side of things. When we write, we try not to put any boundaries or limitations on what comes up, and I feel that if we started to think about the visual side of the storytelling, that would restrict the process.

What are you most excited about with the upcoming EP?

I guess we're most excited about getting it out into the world because then it's no longer ours, it's for everyone. Danny cracks me up with his analogies, so I'll share a couple of them... For him, it's like sending the kids to school for the first time, or when they leave and go off travelling - you have to let them go and fend for themselves (he doesn't have any children of his own).
