A Quick Chat with BELLA DEER
What are the origins of BELLA DEER is a musical project? Where and how did it start?
The BELLA DEER project started when I outgrew my previous originals project. I wanted to take my music in a new, more modern sounding direction. BELLA DEER allowed me to step into a more mature, more refined sound. It also allowed me more flexibility with my performances (i.e. solo, duo, full band), without the confusion of being a βcollectiveβ, which was important to me.
Tell us a bit about the new single βBlack Dotsβ. What does it mean to you?
The song βBlack Dotsβ, allows me to connect with others that feel trapped within the shackles of society and the expectations that come with living in that society. Itβs about breaking down the notion that we have to follow the rules. We all seem to follow the social norms, and try to fit in, but never seem to progress or get anywhere. I believe we should follow our own paths, and do what we want in life. Some people are not satisfied with βregularβ life. Itβs about balancing the fine line between living a meaningful and fulfilling life, and making ends meet.
Are there any inspirations you look to beyond music when writing or performing?
Authenticity. Real world experiences. Relationships. Dreams. Hopes. Desires.
Name the songs that have informed your song writing more than any others.
Hey Now β London Grammar
From Above β The Beach
Saint Lo β Megan Washington
Change β LAUREL
Real Thing β Middle Kids

Lucy Sugerman

Alice Thorn

How do you hope your music might impact listeners?
I hope it makes people feel less alone. Weβre all connected digitally these days, yet many of us feel more alone than ever. I hope my listeners can connect with the song and the lyrics and understand that weβre all feeling the same emotions and may be experiencing similar frustrations in our modern lives.
