A playlist of artists that inspired The Grogans album

There’s too many tracks to list that helped inspire this album but a few are:

  • Bobby / The Pesos - this song really inspired us with the classic 60’s tones they used and the structure of the song. The whole album this song comes from was a huge inspo and we’ve been playing heaps lately when we’re hanging out or by ourselves. Since writing and recording the album, i’ve noticed some similarities in sound with The Pesos in a couple of our songs which shows that they were a big inspiration to us.

  • The Oogars - Power - We played with The Oogars up the coast in brissy, we were all blown away by their sound. The music is like this powerful psychedelic rock with a really mellow surf side to it. Been listening to them so much since that tour.

  • Chevrolet Van / The Nude Party - This is just a classic song with a great catchy melody that i think lots of bands can relate to. The lyrics in the song describe them as a band not listening to the people saying they will never make it in music and they just keep doing their thing. The lyrics; “Because driving around and getting drunk with your friends in a van every night sounds like a lot of fun, but you need a plan B, because it aint gonna last long past 21” are pretty classic because that is what us and lots of other bands do a lot of the time. And we’re not thinking about when it will end we just keep striving to make the best music we can and not force it.

  • Day Tripper / The Beatles - Well obviously any Beatles song is unreal, But i feel that this song was one that really stood out during the process of making this album. From the forward tamborine to the hard panned guitars and the classic rock’n’roll harmonies of that time. Sometimes we would find ourselves having a couple beers and just watching hours of the Beatles together, as a band we can talk about them and just become inspired but also fascinated by how they broke up and their live performances. Jimi Hendrix does a wild live cover of this which is also a huge influence.

  • Right / Wrong - Night Beats - Jordy put us onto the Night Beats and it really helped shape some sounds on the record. In all their records the drums are so huge, roomy and compressed which we aimed for in a couple of our tracks. They manage to do this old ‘Sonics’ Sound with this new age edge. Definitely something we look up to.

  • DIIV - Doused - funnily, our music is pretty different but this track has been popping up with us heaps. The band's ability to create this shoegazer - punk really excites us. The vocals are so saturated in delays and reverbs that it's almost so washy you don't know what is going on. We love that.

  • Sun Medallion - King Tuff - Another must have with the Grogans. We love the acoustic drive throughout the entire song and a lot of his music. Really sitting back on his vocals and guitar solos. Love a lot of his lyrics “in the graveyard where i do my dreamin” a cool one

  • Food For Clouds - The Brian Jonestown Massacre - This is such a good song. The way that it drives and holds your attention while still having the loose feel is amazing. I think the overlapping of the guitar lines is something we’ve used a few times in this album, making them catchy to stick in your head. They also use percussion really well, adding just a tamb can lift the song so much and make such a big difference.

  • Amyl and the Sniffers - Control - Amyl have definitely influenced a few of our heavier tunes, they have such a raw and powerful sound that we all love. The heavy rock n roll/ blues riff in Control is effortlessly hard hitting, they don’t over complicate their songs which is something that we really like.

  • Julia Jacklin - Pressure to party - I think the main inspiration from Julia Jacklin's music comes from her lyrical content and the phrasing that she uses. Her lyrics can be really relatable and I think that’s something that we try to incorporate into our song writing. The line “Nothing good can come from me drinking” has such unique phrasing but works so well with the music, and is a line that most people can probably relate to.
